On a Saturday afternoon when Kolkata had been experiencing a heatwave like never before, we stepped inside The Wall Street Bar in Shakespeare Sarani. Situated in Shagun Mall, this place had opened up last year in September. However, recently they overhauled their menu, introduced new interesting spread of food with focus on non veg items along with the procurement of a liquor licence, making it a full fledged bar dishing out innovative house cocktails.

The first thing that attracts the attention is the interior decoration of this place. The concept of this place is derived from New York’s financial hub and perhaps one of the worlds most famous streets – Wall Street. The Wall Street bar claims to be a gastropub and aims to be a destination for the corporate executives who can loosen their tie knots, unwind a bit after a day’s hard work over couple of drinks and go back home.  The stress on the food is one of the rare scenario in pubs but the menu and a discussion with Mr. Aayush Karel, one of the co owners of this place, assured us that that the focus on food forms the basis of this joint.

We started with Chicken ginger strips with tarter sauce and the perfect marination of the chicken with the fluffy crispy outside was a delight and only made us order more. Moving on to the grilled and baked mushrooms which had been one of their best sellers till now, lived up to the reputation. The mushrooms were stuffed with bell peppers and smoky ricotta cheese and was a star of the show. Strangely, they have their menu focussed on Burmese and Italian cuisine, however one can find a nice assortment of various other dishes like the Thai Curry, baked wantons with pocket cheese, Cranberry barbeque chicken balls, mexican grilled chicken tacos which are worth mentioning. Since this is a place which is famous for Burmese food, I ordered a Khao Suey – the dish met expectations and almost all desire boxes got ticked. The curry per se could have been creamier. While the Bhuna Masala chicken wings served with burnt garlic rice was deceptive  and had flavours exploding in the mouth, the perfectly smoky flavoured garlic rice accompanying the spicy chicken was huge in portion.Next came the beckti flirting away in cupcake skirts- the beckti cup cakes.  Small bite sized portions, with aromatic flavour of the lemon grass and lime along with sour cream placed on top of beckti morsels turned out to be a brilliant proposition.

They have happy hours from 12 to 8 pm everyday and in addition, there are several promotional schemes from spirit companies which keep on happening. The house cocktails are high quality, some electrifying, some elegant, over all very impressive. We tried out the Wall Street Classic, M special Kafir tea and classic martini, all were poisonous enough to leave you a little tipsy.

Overall this is an ideal place for unwinding and with the Vivo IPL playing on a large screen. This is a good place to check out with friends or colleagues for some exciting matches.
